Durmitor national park is living proof that natural beauty is beyond anything created by men

Durmitor is a national park in Montenegro. Among the most beautiful ornaments of the park are the clear gushing rivers and deep canyons. Imposing mountain peaks spreading across the spacious plateau with 18 stunning glacial lakes adding to its charm.

The overwhelming beauty of the ambiance ​put the Durmitor National Park on the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1980 in Paris.

The main feature of the relief Durmitor area is a spacious plateau 1500 meters above sea level. It crosses the deep canyons and imposing mountain peaks, of which 48 are over 2000 meters above sea level. The highest peak is Bobotov Kuk with 2523 m. A special grace to Durmitor is the 18 glacial lakes called mountain eyes. The largest and most attractive of them is the Black Lake.

Flora and Fauna

The vast flora and fauna make Durmitor a lasting inspiration for scientists and nature lovers. Its ecosystem contains over 1300 species of vascular plants. Six of them only grow here.
Durmitor is home to over 300 animal species. The most common are the black bear, the grey wolf, the mountain goat, the marten, and many others. The European Otter lives in the river Tara. Among other more than 172 species of birds and 150 species of butterflies live in this national park.

Cultural monuments

Durmitor National Park also has an abundance of cultural monuments. Some of them even date from ancient times. The most characteristic is the medieval monuments like the ruins of cities and forts, bridges and watchtowers or the necropolis and monastery complexes in the valley of the river Tara.

Tara Canyon Durmitor Montenegro

The Tara Canyon

Tara Canyon is a unique phenomenon of nature. With its depth of 1,300 m (4,300 ft), it is the second deepest canyon in the world. It ranks just behind the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in the United States.
The canyon stretches over 82 km, from Bistrica in Montenegro to Hum in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

The Tara River

Protected by UNESCO since 1977, Tara River Canyon is one of the top 25 recognized world natural heritage sites. The river is 144 km long and the longest river in Montenegro. Even today with all the toxicity spoiling nature, Tara is so clean that you can grab water from it and quench your thirst. This earned Tara the name the Tear of Europe

The Legend of the Black Lake

The legend says that St Sava was on his way across Durmitor to spend a night in a monastery where now the Black Lake is. The monks welcomed him with hospitality. However, they doubted that he was a saint and decided to test him. During the night, they killed a rooster and stuck him in his bag. The next morning the saint continued his way towards Durmitor. The monks followed him to play a joke. They stopped him to ask about the rooster. The saint was surprised by the accusation. After the monks took his bag and showed him the rooster, the saint became very angry. He said: May God make the soil under your monastery collapse and turn into a dark lake. When the monks returned, they were shocked to see that their monastery disappeared, and instead, they found a black lake at the same place.

Bobotov Kuk

Bobotov Kuk peak

Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak of the Durmitor mountain. It stretches to an altitude of 2523 m (8278 ft) and residents thought it was the highest peak in Montenegro. However, research shows that there are three higher peaks on the border with Albania. The first recorded ascend of Bobotov Kuk was in 1883 by Austrian cartographer Oscar Baumann.

Fish Lake

You can find the lake in the middle of a valley known as the Greek side. It is near the village of Novakovici, 1409 meters above sea level. It has a maximum depth of 5.5 m. According to folk tales, the Italian carabinieri once caught two astonishing brook trouts. They were so large that their size reached from one side of the road to the other.
Many tourists compare this part of Durmitor with a fairy tale consisting of untouched nature, tall grass and shrubs.

Lake Pošćansko

The altitude of the lake is 1487 map maximum depth is 3.6 meters. As lake created in cirques villages Poscenje during glacial erosion, attracted the attention of many geologists. Many by-passers, travel writers, scientists were amazed by the beauty of this lake and the scenic panorama that surrounds it.

The Blue Lake

It is situated at the foot of the peak of Durmitor called Sedlena greda, at an altitude of 1609 m, while the depth of the water reaches a maximum 3.3 meters. When you look at the color of this lake, you will understand how it got its name. The lake has trout, and it often inhabited and wild ducks.

Lake Srablje

This is one of the smallest lakes of Durmitor, with a maximum depth of 1.5 m. people who live in the surrounding villages bathe in this water, due to the popular belief that its waters heal skin diseases which is also how it got its name.

Valovito Jezero (Wavy Lake)

This lake is located at an altitude of 1695 m with a depth of 3.5m. Its name comes from the word “wave” or “whoa”, which in some parts of Montenegro indicate the courts with many steep blocks. Still farther, towards to the central parts of Durmitor, you arrive in the circus Škrka, the deepest and most widespread in the Balkan Peninsula. It is a region which you have to visit, in order to feel the full scale of its value. Škrka offers its two lakes. GRAND Škrčka, which Jovan Cvijić named “Green”. It is located at an altitude of 1686 m, with a maximum depth of 17.2 m. The color of this lake water is greenish and maximum transparency reaches 8.5 meters, making it the clearest among the lakes of Durmitor.
