Lovcen National Park

Lovcen is a national park in Montenegro. Slopes of Lovcen Mountain steeply rise from the coastal region of Budva and close to the long winding bays of Boka Kotorska, forming spectacular hinterland to the ancient seafarers’ town of Kotor.

Lovcen National Park nestled in the rocky region of the Dinaric Alps, in the south-western part of Montenegro. It borders between the Skadar Lake basin, the Boka-Kotor Bay, and the Riviera of Budva.

In the south, Lovcen National Park borders with the Budva – Cetinje highway, and with old Kotor road in the north.

Visiting the Lovcen National Park and the Njegos Mausoleum on top of this massive mountain that elevates up to 1600 meters, will leave you with an unforgettable experience.

You can get to the mausoleum either by car or bus. There are two different roads you can take to Lovcen. The road from Kotor (via old Kotor road; ) or over Cetinje 20 km/30 minutes away. Selecting the drive from Kotor, you will enjoy the winding serpentines, with a panoramic landscape of the Kotor bay. At some points, the road becomes narrow, so be alert for traffic.

Lovcen National Park stretches over a surface of 6220 hectares.
The Black Mountain, after which Montenegro got its name, rises to a spectacular altitude of 1749 meters. The mountain slopes of Lovcen are rocky, with numerous fissures, pits, and deep depressions, providing spectacular scenery.

Flora and Fauna

Nestled between the Mediterranean and continental climate, it developed a rich flora and fauna. This national park has more than 1300 plant species, which makes almost one-third of the Montenegrin flora. Many of them are endemic, rare, medicinal, and aromatic.

Within that lush world, various animal species nestled and extended their habitat. Numerous mammals like wolves, bears, wild boars, fox, deers, rabbits, hedgehogs, silver-chest wolves, and others live in this park.
This national park is home to many other animals. More than 200 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles, 5 species of amphibians, 85 species of butterflies 100 species of ants, 45 species of flower flies, and 10 species of bark beetles also live in the Lovcen national park. Lovcen National Park is known for its natural, cultural, and historical characteristics. In addition to the lush natural beauty, there are numerous architectural marvels to visit.

Njegos Mausoleum

The Njegos mausoleum is the biggest and most significant landmark at Lovcen. It overlooks the stunning Jezerski vrh, which the poet and philosopher chose as his resting place. An interesting fact is that it is the highest mausoleum in the world. 461 stairs lead from the parking lot to this imposing structure. It is a mixture of architecture and art, with two caryatids at the entrance to the chapel. They represent two Montenegrin women symbolically guarding the crypt and statue of Njegos carved from granite. The view from the viewpoint behind the mausoleum is incredible.

Family House of Njegos

The family home of Njegos is in the small village called Erakovići in Njegusi. Njegoš’s uncle Petar I Petrovic built the house in 1779. The house adapted into a memorial museum dedicated to Njegoš in 1973. In the courtyard of the poet’s home, the house where the last king Prince Nikola Petrović was born. This stone building is one of the best masonry works in the Njeguško field. It was built by the Duke Mirko Petrovic, prince’s father, in the first half of the 19 century.
