The Lustica peninsula is a peninsula on the south Adriatic Sea, located at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor (Montenegrin: Boka kotorska or Boka). It separates Tivat Bay from the Adriatic.
With an area of 47 km² (13 km long) and 35 km of coast, this peninsula accounts for 12% of Montenegrin coastline. Lustica is divided between the Herceg Novi and Tivat Montenegrin municipalities. On the northeast side there are beautiful views overlooking the Tivat and Herceg Novi bays and on the southwest side; the view of the entrance of the Boka Kotorska.
Luštica peninsula is the main excursion destination for tourists in Herceg Novi. It has the finest beaches and resorts in the Herceg Novi municipality, including Žanjice, Mirište, Arza and Dobreč. Close to Tivat Airport, the area is perfect for development and several large projects including golf courses have been initiated. However, to date there is still very little tourism development with the main building activity limited to that close to Zanjice beach. The biggest tourist centre is Krašići with many houses and apartments for rent. The stunning views and scenery, clean seas, warm summers and relative isolation make Luštica an attractive tourist destination.
Tourism on Lustica
Lustica peninsula has thirteen small villages which are mostly inhabited with locals. As of recent years a smaller percentage of the population inhabiting the peninsula are also people from all over the Former Reublic of Yugoslavia as well as Europeans and Russians who bought land and houses in order to make Lustica their summer or permanent home. Most of Lustica territory is undeveloped and untouched. Whether this is good or bad for tourism is open for discussion, but what can’t be denied is the fact that the peninsula could use an attractive and ecologic health resort that would attract more tourists. However, tourism on Lustica is developing. There are many houses, villas and apartments rented during summer season as well as the entire year.
